The winner of the Pauls Stradiņš Prize is traditionally announced on January 17, the birthday of Professor Pauls Stradiņš. This year the prize was awarded to Professor Alfredo Musajo Somma for strengthening the importance of Latvia, the Latvian Alliance of Medical Historians and the Pauls Stradiņš Museum of the History of Medicine at the international level.
Professor Somma works at the University of Bari in Italy as a professor of plastic and reconstructive surgery. In parallel to his academic work, he has particularly focused on the history of medicine, especially in terms of surgery in the 18thcentury. Professor Somma is a board member of the International Society of Historians of Medicine (ISHM) and has been actively involved in organizing the 47thISHM congress in 2020 in Rīga. He will receive the Stradiņš Prize during the Congress and will deliver a scholarly lecture there.
The Pauls Stradiņš Prize is awarded each year for outstanding research in the history of medicine or major achievements in practical medicine by the Pauls Stradiņš Museum of the History of Medicine, the Rīga Stradiņš University and the Latvian Academy of Sciences. It is named after Professor Pauls Stradiņš, who was a distinguished surgeon and oncologist, the founder of the museum and a school for nurses, and a docent at the Faculty of Medicine.
