Pauls Stradins Museum for history of medicine

The Salon Exhibition "Skins"

The Pauls Stradiņš Museum of the History of Medicine and the Anatomy Museum of the Rīga Stradiņš University are pleased to invite you to a salon exhibition, "Skins," which will open on August 31 at the Museum of the History of Medicine. The exhibition is being organised by the Anatomy Museum and the artist Ausma Šmite, and visitors will look at a restored collection of tattooed skin from the museum.  This is rare and unusual evidence of the tradition of tattooing in Latvia during the late 19thand early 20thcentury, also speaking to the scientific interests of anatomists at that time.

Šmite, for her part, has created a collection of tattoos from the future.  After looking at historical tattoos that feature ships, anchors, steering wheels, unusual creatures and naughty little scenes, she decided that tattoos store memories, helping the person and others to know who the person was, where he was and what he did.  It represents a map of the body that helps people to orientate themselves through their own lives and those of others.

This is the first exhibition to be staged since the reconstruction of the RSU museum, and it will feature one of its historical and anatomical collections.  The new Anatomy Museum is to be reopened in late 2019 at its historical location at Kronvalda Boulevard 9.
