Pauls Stradins Museum for history of medicine

BEING ALONGSIDE

Nurses and midwives have always played an essential and irreplaceable role in preserving and improving people's health.  The origins of both professions stretch back into antiquity, when people started to provide assistance when others got sick and during childbirth.  Today, these professions have expanded substantially, and nurses and midwives also do important work in educating the public about various health-related issues.

The World Health Organisation has declared 2020 to be the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife so as to honour the essential role and investment that nurses and midwives make in health promotion and welfare, as well as to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, who is seen as the mother of the nursing profession.

This exhibition was organised to present the role of nurses and midwives in society and to honour people who work in these professions.  The museum is thankful to the Latvian Association of Nurses and the Latvian Association of Midwives for their help in organising the exhibition.

Probably visitors will be able to see the exhibition from May 13.
